“Lola’s Theme” made The Shapeshifters a fixture of mid-2000s house music, reaching No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in July 2004. The record was the debut single from the project, then a duo formed by British producer Simon Marlin and Swedish producer Max Reich, who is from Gothenburg.

The pair produced and toured together under The Shapeshifters name, working in a house style associated with disco, funk and prominent vocal performances. They were signed to Positiva before joining Defected Records in 2008, linking the project to one of the UK’s enduring house-music labels.

Since 2017, Marlin has continued The Shapeshifters as a solo act, both producing and performing under the name. In the United States, physical releases have also appeared as Shape:UK, a variation adopted partly because of a trademark conflict with the Los Angeles hip-hop group the Shape Shifters. Other variations of the name include Shape UK and Shape Shifter UK.
