Balearic Artists

Ibiza's mid-1980s club and beach-rave culture gave Balearic its name. It began as an eclectic, DJ-led approach to dance music rather than a tightly bounded genre, shaped by the records that worked in the island's open-ended sets and relaxed daytime-to-nighttime atmosphere.

Balearic can move between house rhythms, soft-focus electronic textures, disco inflections and slower, more spacious grooves. Its appeal lies in contrast: a track may feel club-ready without being hard-edged, or use breezy melodies and dubby percussion without settling into pure chillout. The mood is often warm, unhurried and transportive, but the style isn't limited to one tempo or production method.

By the early-to-mid-1990s, Balearic had also become a more specific strand of electronic dance and house music. It differs from deep house through its broader stylistic range, and from nu disco or space disco through its less fixed relationship to disco revivalism. “Ibiza house” can suggest a single sound, but Balearic has always left room for a DJ's selection and the meeting of disparate records.
