Poté was born in St Lucia and moved to London with his family at 12. His first releases, for the Scratch Perverts imprint Black Gold, were club tracks with Caribbean percussion underneath and something more emotional showing at the edges. Branko heard them and signed him to Enchufada for the 2015 EP 'Voyeurism'.

Benji B took the next step, playing the music on Radio 1 and signing him to Deviation, which produced 'Spiral, My Love' in 2018. Around that record he started singing more and writing melodies in earnest, working with Kojey Radical and Alxndr London, remixing Gorillaz and recording with Africa Express in Johannesburg. Supporting Bonobo across Europe gave him his first live show.

He moved to Paris in 2019 and set up Versicolor the year after, a label and club night that carried the 'Rose' EPs. His album 'A Tenuous Tale of Her' was the first release on Bonobo's OUTLIER, with Damon Albarn turning up on 'Young Lies' in the character of a corrupt politician. Poté wrote it as something closer to theatre, a piece that could hold a stage without him standing on it.
