Metro Boomin
Leland Tyler Wayne, known professionally as Metro Boomin, is an American record producer, DJ, and songwriter renowned for shaping modern hip-hop and trap music with his distinctive style. Born on September 16, 1993, in St. Louis, Missouri, he began his music production journey during his teenage years, initially aiming to rap but soon focusing entirely on crafting beats. His early influences included a diverse range of artists, fueling his passion for music production.
During high school, Metro Boomin started producing beats at the age of 13, using software like FruityLoops. He utilized social media platforms, particularly Twitter, to connect with established rap artists, leading to collaborations with Atlanta-based rappers such as OJ Da Juiceman and, subsequently, Gucci Mane and Future. These early partnerships played a pivotal role in his burgeoning career.
After graduating from high school, Wayne moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, initially pursuing a degree in business management. However, the demands of his rapidly growing music career led him to take a hiatus from his studies to focus on production full-time. This decision paved the way for collaborations with prominent artists, including Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and The Weeknd.
In 2013, Metro Boomin released his debut mixtape, "19 & Boomin," featuring collaborations with artists like Future and Gucci Mane. His breakthrough came with the production of Future's 2014 single "Karate Chop," followed by co-producing the track "Tuesday" for iLoveMakonnen, which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. He continued to solidify his status with contributions to Future's acclaimed mixtape "Monster" in 2014.
In 2015, Metro Boomin served as executive producer for Drake and Future's collaborative mixtape "What a Time to Be Alive," further establishing his influence in the industry. The following years saw a series of successful collaborations, including the mixtape "Savage Mode" with 21 Savage in 2016, and projects like "Perfect Timing" with Nav, "Without Warning" with 21 Savage and Offset, and "Double or Nothing" with Big Sean in 2017.
Metro Boomin's debut solo studio album, "Not All Heroes Wear Capes," was released in November 2018 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, featuring artists such as Travis Scott, 21 Savage, and Gunna. In 2020, he reunited with 21 Savage for "Savage Mode II," which also debuted at number one and included the hit single "Runnin."
In December 2022, he released his second solo studio album, "Heroes & Villains," collaborating with artists like Future, The Weeknd, and Travis Scott. The album received positive reviews and continued his streak of chart-topping projects. In 2023, Metro Boomin expanded his repertoire by producing the soundtrack for the film "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," showcasing his versatility as a producer.
Throughout his career, Metro Boomin has been recognized with several awards, including the BET Hip Hop Award for Producer of the Year in 2016 and 2017, as well as the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Award for Producer of the Year in those same years. His ability to craft unique soundscapes has solidified his status as a key figure in contemporary hip-hop.
In 2017, he launched his own label, Boominati Worldwide, in partnership with Republic Records and Universal Music Group, aiming to foster new talent and expand his influence in the music industry. His production style, characterized by heavy bass, melodic synths, and dark, atmospheric sounds, has significantly contributed to the evolution of modern trap music.
