Tyler, the Creator broke through to mainstream attention with “Yonkers,” the 2011 single and video from Goblin, whose horrorcore-influenced production and violent, transgressive lyrics drew both acclaim and controversy. Born Tyler Gregory Okonma on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, he works as a rapper, singer, record producer, and fashion designer. His records regularly use alter egos and alternate personas, while his music has moved between abrasive rap, melodic songwriting, jazz, soul, and R&B.

In the late 2000s, Okonma co-founded and led Odd Future. Within the collective he worked as a rapper, producer, director, and actor, produced albums for several members, and appeared in the group’s Adult Swim sketch-comedy series Loiter Squad from 2012 to 2014. He launched his solo career with the self-released debut studio album Bastard in 2009, followed by Goblin in 2011 and Wolf in 2013. After Wolf, his sound moved away from horrorcore toward more accessible arrangements and a broader palette of jazz, soul, and R&B.

Cherry Bomb, released in 2015, included guest appearances from Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Flower Boy followed in 2017, earning widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. His 2019 album Igor and 2021’s Call Me If You Get Lost both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and each won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, at the 62nd and 64th Grammy Awards. Later releases Chromakopia in 2024 and Don’t Tap the Glass in 2025 also opened at number one in the United States; Chromakopia delivered the strongest first-week sales of his career. He has won three Grammy Awards overall, as well as three BET Hip Hop Awards, a Brit Award, and an MTV Video Music Award.

Outside records, Okonma founded the clothing brands Golf Wang and Le Fleur and has collaborated with Lacoste, Converse, and Louis Vuitton. He also founded Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, an annual festival launched in 2012 that has hosted artists including Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, and Billie Eilish. Under the name Wolf Haley, he has directed all of his music and promotional videos. In 2025, credited under his birth name, he made his feature-film debut as Wally in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme.
