Avantasia
Avantasia is a German metal opera project created by Tobias Sammet, the vocalist of the band Edguy. Conceived as a supergroup format, it is built around the idea of a rock opera: songs are written and presented as part of larger narratives, and recordings and performances draw on contributions from a rotating cast of vocalists and musicians.
The project is closely associated with concept albums, using recurring characters, storylines, and theatrical framing that align it with the traditions of opera and the rock opera form. This approach has placed Avantasia at the intersection of power metal and symphonic and gothic-leaning metal styles, with an emphasis on dramatic vocals and narrative structure rather than a fixed band lineup.
The name “Avantasia” combines “Avalon” with “fantasia” (“fantasy”). According to the project’s description, it refers to “a world beyond human imagination,” reflecting the fantasy setting that underpins its stories and imagery. Sammet serves as the central creative figure, acting as the project’s singer and songwriter while inviting other performers to take on prominent roles within the metal opera framework.
