Tectonic

Tectonic emerged as one of dubstep's founding labels, operating alongside Tempa, DMZ, Hyperdub and Hotflush during the genre's formative years. Founded and run by Rob Ellis, better known as Pinch, the British label became closely tied to Bristol while giving dubstep a wider set of possibilities through releases that connected its bass weight and sound-system focus with techno.

Pinch's own Underwater Dancehall stands among the label's key albums, as does 2562's Unbalance. Tectonic also released music by central figures in early and mid-2000s dubstep, including Skream, Benga, Digital Mystikz and Joker. Those records placed the label within dubstep's core while its techno-facing work helped define a route between the two styles.

The label's catalogue reflects that dual commitment: rooted in dubstep, but open to its related forms and to the rhythmic pressure, spatial production and darker club focus shared with techno. Through Pinch's direction, Tectonic became a focal point for Bristol artists and listeners as the city's scene took shape.
