In Flames
In Flames emerged from Gothenburg in 1990 and became one of the pioneering bands of the city’s melodic death metal movement, alongside acts including At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. The group’s early work combined death metal weight with prominent melody, a balance closely associated with the Gothenburg metal sound. In its first years, In Flames operated with a shifting cast of musicians and made use of numerous session players while developing its recorded identity.
The lineup became more settled around the 1999 album Colony. Vocalist Anders Fridén and lead guitarist Björn Gelotte have been the band’s consistent members since 1995, though Gelotte initially joined as a drummer before moving to guitar. Founding member Jesper Strömblad left in 2010, leaving the group without any original members for the first time.
In Flames’ sixth studio album, Reroute to Remain, arrived in 2002 and marked a stylistic shift toward alternative metal, moving further from the melodic death metal approach of the earlier records. The change drew criticism from listeners who preferred the band’s heavier sound, but it also broadened its mainstream audience and increased album sales. The band has sold more than two million records worldwide.
Across its career, In Flames has released fourteen studio albums, three EPs and two live DVDs. Its fourteenth studio album, Foregone, was released in 2023. The band has received ten Swedish Grammis Award nominations and won seven. Among those wins are Hard Rock/Metal Album of the Year awards for Soundtrack to Your Escape in 2005, Come Clarity in 2007, A Sense of Purpose in 2009 and Foregone in 2024.
