Hyperdub
Hyperdub is a London-based British electronic music label founded in 2004 by Steve Goodman, known as Kode9. It began as a webzine before developing into a record label, and it emerged from the UK’s early dubstep scene. Kode9 has run the label, shaping a catalogue associated with bass-driven electronic music and adjacent experimental forms.
From its origins in dubstep, Hyperdub became closely linked with artists who helped define and expand the sound’s possibilities. Burial is among the label’s best-known signings, and releases by producers such as Zomby and Ikonika reflect Hyperdub’s early engagement with the genre’s darker, rhythm-focused strains as well as its more melodic, synthetic edges. The label’s identity has also been marked by a willingness to move beyond dubstep’s initial template, maintaining a focus on forward-leaning electronic music rather than a single style.
Over time, Hyperdub’s roster has encompassed a wide range of approaches, including club music, experimental pop, and hybrid electronic forms. Artists associated with the label have included Cooly G, DVA, Jessy Lanza, Laurel Halo, Klein, and Dean Blunt, each representing different strands of contemporary electronic and related music. The label has also released work by DJ Rashad and Fatima Al Qadiri, pointing to its interest in international and cross-genre perspectives within electronic music. While Hyperdub’s roots are in a specific London scene, its catalogue reflects an outward-looking approach that connects UK bass music to broader currents in global electronic production.
