Iron Maiden
The prominent band from the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal' (NWOBHM), Iron Maiden, originated from the creativity of bassist-songwriter Steve Harris, who is the only member with a presence on all records alongside guitarist Dave Murray. They are recognized for their music featuring twin-lead harmony guitars (a nod to Judas Priest), galloping bass lines, and operatic vocals, with lyrics often exploring themes that are spooky, historical, or inspired by literature/movies. Their most renowned tracks are either high-energy rockers that typically open albums and become singles (like "Aces High," "The Wicker Man") or intricate epics that often conclude their albums (such as "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Fear of the Dark"). Particularly notable is their mascot, 'Eddie the Head,' an albino zombie that decorates their artwork, created by Derek Riggs, Maiden's long-term artist and album cover designer. Eddie is also featured on stage as part of the set or as a character in a large costume.
Established in London in 1975, the band faced challenges in the club circuit with a frequently changing lineup until their 1979 demo, The Soundhouse Tapes, secured them a recording contract with EMI. Their initial two albums achieved moderate success, and with the arrival of singer Bruce Dickinson for their third album, The Number of the Beast (1982), Iron Maiden became a leading band in the metal genre. The band has sold over 85 million records globally (including 16 studio albums, 7 compilations, and numerous live albums and videos) and has toured 59 countries, performing over 5000 concerts.
