M83 is a French electronic/shoegaze/pop group from Antibes, formed in 2001 by Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. Gonzalez is the main member of the band following Fromageau’s departure after their second album's release. The band is named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83, with a musical style influenced by shoegaze through extensive reverb effects and softly spoken lyrics over loud instrumentals, although M83’s tracks use much less guitar than typical shoegaze bands.

Following the release of the breakout hit “Midnight City” from their 2011 double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, M83 achieved significant mainstream recognition and has continued to tour and create music for films and television.
