M83 found breakout success in 2011 with “Midnight City,” the lead single from the double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. The record was nominated for a Grammy Award and brought the French electronic project to a wider audience, pairing Anthony Gonzalez’s lead vocals and songwriting with a sound that moves between dream pop, new wave, shoegaze and ambient music.

Formed in Antibes in 1999, M83 began as a duo of multi-instrumentalists Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. The project takes its name from Messier 83, a spiral galaxy. Fromageau left shortly after touring behind the group’s second album, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, and Gonzalez has remained M83’s sole constant member. He records primarily on his own while working with numerous guest musicians.

Across nine studio albums and two soundtracks, M83 has combined electronic production with pop songcraft, heavily textured arrangements and elements associated with shoegaze and post-rock. The project records for Mute Records, with Gonzalez directing its music as its primary songwriter and vocalist.
