In 1960, the Impulse! label was founded as a jazz subsidiary of Am-Par Record Corp. under the direction of Creed Taylor, and shortly after its inception, Bob Thiele.

In the 60s, the Canadian versions of the label were produced by Sparton Of Canada Ltd., featuring the Sparton Impulse! Records label.

In 1962, the company name changed to ABC-Paramount Records, Inc., but the Sparton Impulse! Records continued to mention Am-Par Record Corp. even after the name change.

In 1967, another change was made to ABC Records, Inc. During this period, a second ABC Records brand sometimes appeared on the label.

In 1974, versions on the concentric label design from the 70s often displayed the ABC Impulse! label brand.

The label operated until 1979, though new recordings ceased by 1977, continuing on with reissues.

In 1979, ABC was acquired by MCA Records, leading to the closure of Impulse! along with all other ABC-affiliated labels.

Impulse! is known as The House That Trane Built due to John Coltrane's association with the label from 1961 to 1967.

MCA revived the label primarily as a reissue imprint with a few new releases in the 1980s. It was reactivated as part of MCA-owned GRP with new artist signings, including Diana Krall, in the 1990s. Following a series of major label buy-outs and mergers, Impulse! is now part of The Verve Music Group unit within the larger multi-national Universal Music Group.
