Wall of Sound

Wall of Sound emerged from London in 1994 as an independent label closely tied to the surge of British big beat in the mid-to-late 1990s. Founded by Mark Jones, it was described as being “at the center of the revolution” during the style’s commercial peak, alongside Brighton label Skint Records.

The label introduced several of big beat’s best-known acts to an international audience, including Propellerheads, The Wiseguys and Les Rythmes Digitales. Its releases helped define a period when electronic production, breakbeats and dance-floor energy were crossing into British pop culture on a large scale.

Although Wall of Sound worked across more than one genre, its name remains most closely associated with that late-1990s big beat moment and the artists who gave it much of its personality. From its London base, the label became a home for records that connected club-oriented electronic music with a broad, international listenership.
