Sub Pop

Abbreviation for "Subterranean Pop."

The label originated from Bruce Pavitt's Olympia, WA-based fanzine, which evolved into a well-regarded cassettezine of the same name.

After moving to Seattle, he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also titled Sub Pop.

The label made initial moves into the record industry with a Green River 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, gaining significant recognition in the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s, including Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick," which topped nearly every music journalist's year-end top 10 playlist globally.

Further promotion of the label in the English music press put them in the spotlight, giving rise to grunge.

Label-Code is 03159; this is rarely seen printed on releases (primarily on those manufactured/licensed by Warner/WEA Germany).
