Sub Pop
Sub Pop is an independent record label closely associated with the rise of grunge, after achieving fame in the early 1990s for signing Seattle bands that became central to the movement. The label is often credited with helping popularize grunge music, particularly through early releases by Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney.
The label was founded in 1986 in Seattle by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman. Pavitt’s earlier work under the “Sub Pop” name began in Olympia, Washington, where it originated as a print fanzine and later a cassettezine. After moving to Seattle, he used the same name for a music column in The Seattle Rocket, and the Sub Pop identity carried into the label’s early recording activity.
As Sub Pop’s profile grew, it became known for a roster that extended well beyond its early Seattle focus. Alongside its foundational grunge-era artists, the label has released music by acts spanning indie rock, alternative, and experimental scenes, including Fleet Foxes, Beach House, The Postal Service, Sleater-Kinney, Flight of the Conchords, Foals, Blitzen Trapper, Father John Misty, Shabazz Palaces, Weyes Blood, Bully, La Luz, Low, METZ, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Kiwi Jr., Built to Spill, TV Priest, and The Shins. The label has also worked with artists such as clipping. and Guerilla Toss, reflecting its continued interest in contemporary and genre-blurring projects.
In 1995, the owners of Sub Pop sold a 49% stake of the label to Warner Music Group. Sub Pop continues to be identified with Seattle and with the legacy of the grunge movement, while maintaining a catalog that includes both established names and newer artists.
