Southern Lord
Southern Lord is an American heavy metal label associated with experimental strains of metal, particularly doom metal, stoner rock, and drone metal. It emerged in 1998 and became closely identified with releases that favored slow tempos, dense amplification, and extended, atmospheric song structures, alongside a broader interest in heavy music that crosses into punk and extreme metal.
The label was founded in 1998 by Greg Anderson. In its early years, Southern Lord focused on experimental metal, with an emphasis on doom, stoner rock, and drone. Over time, it widened its scope, adding artists connected to black metal as well as hardcore punk and crust punk. This expansion positioned the label less as a single-genre imprint than as a home for adjacent heavy styles that share an abrasive or minimalist sensibility.
Southern Lord’s catalog is often discussed in relation to drone and doom projects such as Sunn O))) and Earth, and it has also released work by Boris, Weedeater, and Goatsnake. The label’s later breadth is reflected in its association with hardcore and punk-adjacent acts, including Power Trip and Heroin, and in its willingness to accommodate different approaches to heaviness, from metal’s slower, immersive forms to more direct, aggressive punk-derived sounds.
Operating under its own name and website, Southern Lord has maintained an identity rooted in heavy music’s experimental and underground currents, while remaining open to stylistic overlap between metal and punk. Its roster and release history illustrate a label built around intensity and texture rather than strict genre boundaries.
