Southern Lord

Southern Lord began in 1998 as Greg Anderson's outlet for the slow, heavy end of experimental metal. Its early identity was rooted in doom metal, stoner rock and drone, with releases from artists including Sunn O))), Boris, Earth, Weedeater and Goatsnake placing dense riffs, sustained volume and long-form atmosphere at the centre of the label's work.

Based in the United States, Southern Lord has since broadened beyond its initial doom and drone focus. Its roster has included black metal, death metal, grindcore, hardcore and crust punk alongside more experimental records. Artists such as Power Trip, Deaf Club, HEDONIST, Heroin, Toadliquor, Marthe and Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter reflect a catalogue that moves between metal's heaviest forms and punk's more abrasive, direct strains.

Anderson founded Southern Lord in 1998, and the label's catalogue has remained closely associated with underground heavy music in its many forms, from the expansive weight of drone and doom to the compressed aggression of hardcore, grindcore and punk.
