Saddle Creek
Saddle Creek Records is an independent American label closely associated with “the Omaha Sound,” a strain of indie rock linked to Omaha, Nebraska and often described as carrying a slight country twang. The label takes its name from Saddle Creek Road, a major street in midtown Omaha, and has been tied to the city’s music community since its earliest days.
The label began in 1993 as a college class project on entrepreneurship. It was founded by Mike Mogis and Justin Oberst, and was initially called Lumberjack Records. The name Saddle Creek first appeared publicly on a show flyer that invited people to “Spend an evening with Saddle Creek,” marking an early moment when the imprint’s identity started to cohere around local shows and a shared scene. Mogis soon turned over his role in the company to Robb Nansel, a change that helped shape the label’s subsequent operations and continuity.
Over time, Saddle Creek became known as a flagship outlet for the Omaha Sound, issuing records that fit within indie rock while retaining regional character. Its roster has included artists whose work aligns with that identity as well as later signings that reflect the label’s broader indie orientation. Among the artists associated with Saddle Creek are Neva Dinova, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Land of Talk, SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, Ada Lea, Indigo De Souza, Young Jesus, and Dean Johnson, illustrating the label’s reach beyond Nebraska while remaining rooted in the aesthetic it helped popularize.
Saddle Creek has also been connected to related activity within its wider circle. A “sister label” described in relation to Saddle Creek is Team Love, begun in 2004 by Conor Oberst, the brother of co-founder Justin Oberst. Saddle Creek’s releases are distributed by Redeye Distribution.
