PIAS Recordings, originally known as Play It Again Sam, emerged in the early 1980s as part of a wave of European independent labels. Its earliest profile was closely tied to electronic and electronic-rock music, with prominent early artists including Front 242, Meat Beat Manifesto, and The Young Gods. Those releases helped establish PIAS as a home for forward-leaning, genre-adjacent acts operating between rock and electronic scenes.

Founded in 1982 by Kenny Gates and Michel Lambot, PIAS later broadened its roster beyond its initial electronic-rock core. Over time it became associated with a wider range of alternative and independent music, adding artists such as The Sound, Soulwax/2ManyDJ’s, Sigur Rós, and Mogwai. The shift reflected an expansion in scope rather than a clean break, with the label continuing to connect different strands of independent music under the same umbrella.

PIAS is described as a British-Belgian record label. In September 2024, the company was acquired by Universal Music Group.
