Naive
Naïve Records is a French independent label based in Paris, known for a catalog that spans electronic music, pop, jazz, and classical. Its identity has been shaped by a willingness to operate across genres rather than focusing on a single niche, placing contemporary jazz releases alongside classical recordings and projects rooted in modern pop and electronic production.
The label was founded in 1998 by Patrick Zelnik, Gilles Paires, Frédéric Rebet, and Eric Tong Cuong. Over time, Naïve became associated with a roster that reflects its stylistic breadth. In jazz, the label has released work connected to artists such as Tigran Hamasyan, Shai Maestro, and Nate Smith, musicians often linked with modern, rhythmically driven approaches and cross-genre collaboration. Naïve has also been connected with newer jazz and adjacent projects including Emile Londonien and Louis Matute, reinforcing its presence in contemporary European jazz.
Naïve’s scope has extended beyond jazz into French popular music, including releases associated with artists such as Oxmo Puccino, illustrating the label’s engagement with French-language scenes alongside its instrumental and classical output. This mix of artists and genres aligns with the label’s stated specialization across electronic, pop, jazz, and classical music, and positions it as a Paris-based imprint whose profile is defined by variety rather than a single signature sound.
In 2016, Naïve entered bankruptcy in June and was taken over in August by the French digital distributor Believe. Despite this change in ownership, the label name remains linked to a wide-ranging musical catalog and a Paris base, with activity that has encompassed established international jazz figures as well as artists connected to French pop and broader contemporary music.
