Mexican Summer
Named after Marissa Nadler’s song “Mexican Summer,” Mexican Summer is a Brooklyn-based independent label founded in 2009 by Keith Abrahamsson and Andres Santo Domingo. Its catalogue has moved comfortably through experimental pop, psych rock, folk, singer-songwriter records and more oblique forms of independent music, with an emphasis on artists whose work doesn’t sit neatly in one style.
The label has released music by Best Coast, Kurt Vile, Ariel Pink, Allah-Las, Weyes Blood, Connan Mockasin, Jessica Pratt and Cate Le Bon, a roster that reflects its range from hazy guitar pop and psychedelic rock to intimate songwriting and left-field pop. More recent artists associated with the label include L’Rain, Photay, Sessa, Katzin, Devendra Banhart, Hayden Pedigo and Mega Bog.
In 2013, T: The New York Times Style Magazine called Mexican Summer “a bastion for experimental pop” and cited it as a model for music publishing in the 21st century. Mexican Summer also operates alongside Anthology, a book publisher and archival record label focused on responsibly licensed material, design and definitive presentations.
