Italians Do It Better
Italians Do It Better grew out of Johnny Jewel's work with Glass Candy and Chromatics, becoming a home for sleek electronic music that draws on synth-pop, post-punk and Italo-disco. The independent label was started by Jewel and Mike Simonetti on July 20, 2006, and is based between Portland and West Hollywood.
The label's early purpose was to focus on Jewel's own projects, including Glass Candy and Chromatics, before expanding to artists and projects such as Desire, Symmetry and Mirage. Its releases have also connected artists including Sally Shapiro, Dlina Volny, Nicolaas, Love Object, Annie-Claude Deschênes, Farah and Orion with the label's nocturnal electronic aesthetic.
Johnny Jewel owns Italians Do It Better and produces, writes and contributes to the label's acts. Mike Simonetti departed in 2013, after which Jewel operated the label. The After Dark compilation series has served as a recurring snapshot of its roster, with editions released in 2007, 2013, 2020 and 2022.
