Hardly Art
Hardly Art is an American independent record label based in Seattle, Washington. Founded in early 2007 by Sub Pop Records, it takes its name from a lyric in “No Culture Icons” by the Thermals. The label operates with a small staff of three full-time employees.
Hardly Art’s roster reflects a focus on contemporary independent music, with releases that sit comfortably in the orbit of indie rock and related singer-songwriter and experimental strains. Artists associated with the label include Lala Lala, Shana Cleveland, Chris Cohen, Dick Stusso, youbet, Marinero, ill peach, and tofusmell, a mix that points to an emphasis on character-driven songwriting alongside more idiosyncratic, left-of-center projects.
In 2016, Hardly Art received a Genius Award nomination from Seattle weekly The Stranger, recognizing its contributions to independent music. The label is distributed by the Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA) and Sub Pop.
