Fat Possum

Fat Possum Records began by recording previously unknown Mississippi blues artists, often from the towns around Oxford and Holly Springs. Based in Water Valley and Oxford, Mississippi, the independent American label built its early identity around musicians whose work sat outside the usual music-industry channels.

The label later expanded beyond its original blues focus, signing younger rock acts alongside its roots-oriented catalogue. Its profile has been documented by outlets including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Observer and NPR, and in the 2004 documentary You See Me Laughin, as well as a Sundance Channel production.

Fat Possum also distributes the Hi Records catalogue, linking its work to another major body of Southern soul and R&B recordings. Its more recent artist roster includes Youth Lagoon, The Weather Station, Honeyglaze, E L U C I D, Ghais Guevara, No Windows, Liam Benzvi and Dutch Interior, reflecting a catalogue that now reaches well beyond the Mississippi blues tradition that first defined the label.
