Constellation
Constellation Records is closely associated with Montreal’s post-rock movement, with a catalog that includes landmark releases by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band, and Do Make Say Think. Through these groups, the label became identified with expansive, ensemble-driven rock music that often blurs the line between band formats and orchestral approaches.
The label is a Canadian independent operation based in Montreal, Quebec. It was founded in 1997 by Don Wilkie and Ian Ilavsky. While Constellation is best known for post-rock, its roster has also included related offshoots and side projects connected to its core artists, such as Re: and 1-Speed Bike, both associated with members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This broader circle of releases has helped define Constellation’s identity as a home for projects that share personnel and aesthetic concerns, even when the music moves away from guitar-based rock toward more experimental forms.
Alongside the artists most frequently linked to its post-rock reputation, Constellation has continued to release work by a range of musicians, including Jessica Moss, Kee Avil, T. Gowdy, Joni Void, SANAM, The Dwarfs of East Agouza, stardorri, and Rivertunes. These releases reflect the label’s wider interest in exploratory music rooted in the Montreal scene while remaining open to different lineages and approaches.
