Bella Union

Bella Union is a British independent record label founded in 1997 by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. The label is now run solely by Raymonde, who is also known for his work as a multi-instrumentalist. From its outset, Bella Union has been associated with artist-led curation and a catalogue shaped by musicians rather than corporate branding.

The label’s identity has often been tied to discovering and supporting new acts alongside established names. Bella Union has released music by artists including Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Lanterns on the Lake, I Break Horses, Ballet School, and Midlake, reflecting a focus on contemporary independent music with an ear for atmospheric and guitar-led styles. Its roster has continued to evolve, with artists such as White Denim, Sophie Jamieson, congratulations, plantoid, SONIKKU, Miki Berenyi Trio, Ezra Furman, and C Duncan also associated with the label’s output.

Although Bella Union’s public profile is anchored in its releases and artist relationships, it has also appeared as a copyright-holding entity on recordings. The label’s history remains closely linked to Raymonde’s stewardship, with its founding rooted in the creative partnership of two members of Cocteau Twins and its later direction guided by Raymonde alone.
