Tove Lo broke internationally with “Habits (Stay High),” the 2014 sleeper hit that reached number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song appeared on her debut album, Queen of the Clouds, which opened at number 14 on the Billboard 200 in October 2014 and also produced “Talking Body.” Her frank, autobiographical writing and grunge-influenced approach to pop led Out to call her “the saddest girl in Sweden,” while Rolling Stone described her as “Sweden’s darkest pop export.”

Born Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson on 29 October 1987, she was raised in Djursholm, in the Danderyd district near Stockholm. She attended Rytmus Musikergymnasiet, a music school, and formed the rock band Tremblebee in 2006. After the group disbanded, she turned toward songwriting, signing a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music in 2011. She worked with producers including Alexander Kronlund, Max Martin and Xenomania, writing for other performers while independently recording her own material.

In 2013, Lo signed with Universal Music, Island and Polydor. Her second album, Lady Wood, arrived in October 2016 and debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, “Cool Girl,” became an international hit. She followed it with Blue Lips in 2017 and Sunshine Kitty in 2019. The latter included “Glad He’s Gone,” whose video received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Music Video.

Lo released Dirt Femme in 2022, with singles including “How Long” and “No One Dies from Love.” “How Long” was used on the soundtrack for the second season of the American teen drama Euphoria. Alongside her own catalogue, she has co-written songs for artists including Ellie Goulding and Lorde. Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do,” which Lo co-wrote, brought Grammy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Her collaborations as a performer include work with Alesso, Broods, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Flume, Kylie Minogue, Martin Garrix, Nick Jonas and Nelly Furtado.
