Todd Edwards

Todd Edwards, born Todd Edward Imperatrice on December 9, 1972, is an American garage house producer, DJ and singer whose cut-up vocal style became central to his work. Known as “Todd the God,” he has also recorded under aliases including the Messenger and the Sample Choir. His productions use tightly chopped vocal samples, often breaking phrases into small fragments and rebuilding them into rhythmic hooks.

Edwards began producing in the 1990s, working primarily with New York’s Nervous Records. His 1993 single “Guide My Soul” helped pioneer speed garage, while 1994’s “Saved My Life” became a club hit in the United Kingdom. His work played a role in the development of UK garage, and he is credited as an important influence on electronic music more broadly.

Remixing has been a major part of Edwards’ career. He has made hundreds of remixes for artists including Wildchild, St Germain, Benjamin Diamond, Justice, Klaxons and Dimitri from Paris, applying his vocal-sampling approach to material from across house, club music and pop.

Edwards’ relationship with Daft Punk produced two prominent collaborations. He co-produced and contributed vocals to “Face to Face,” from the duo’s 2001 album Discovery; the song later reached number one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart in 2004. He returned to work with Daft Punk on “Fragments of Time” from their 2013 album Random Access Memories, co-writing, co-producing and singing on the track. His contribution to the album earned him a Grammy Award when Random Access Memories won Album of the Year at the 2014 ceremony.
