The Avalanches
The Avalanches built their reputation on dense, sample-built records that turn fragments of existing music into sweeping electronic collage. Formed in Melbourne in 1997, the Australian group became closely associated with plunderphonics, and their debut album Since I Left You, released in 2000, has been recognised by many critics as the genre's most important example.
Since I Left You established a sound rooted in turntablism, hip hop, disco, breaks and psychedelic pop, assembled with a producer's attention to rhythm and flow. The group followed it 16 years later with Wildflower in 2016, then released their third studio album, We Will Always Love You, in 2020. A fourth album, No Bad Memories, is scheduled for release on 16 October 2026.
The Avalanches' live performances combine a band format with DJing. The current lineup includes co-founders Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi alongside multi-instrumentalist Andy Szekeres. Earlier and associated members have included Darren Seltmann, James De La Cruz, Gordon McQuilten, Dexter Fabay and Katsumi.
