Rick Wade
Rick Wade is an American DJ and deep house recording artist closely associated with Detroit’s club and radio culture. Working under his own name as well as aliases including Dr. Low-Tech and Big Daddy Rick, he is known for a style that sits between deep house, Detroit house, and jazz house.
Wade was born in western Michigan, less than an hour from Chicago’s South Side. In the mid-1980s, while studying at the University of Michigan, he began taking gigs playing deep underground house at the Nectarine Ballroom, a venue that also helped launch other Detroit-area DJs. Around the same period, he hosted a mix show on the University of Michigan’s WCBN titled “Journey To The Land Of House,” which helped build his profile locally and supported a run of club bookings in and around Detroit.
By 1993, Wade had established his own studio and started a label, Harmonie Park, creating a base for his productions and releases. His music has been issued both through his own imprint and via a range of independent dance labels, reflecting a career rooted in the underground house network rather than a single label home. In addition to releases under the Rick Wade name, he has used variations of his given name, such as R. L. Wade and R.L. Wade, alongside other pseudonyms.
Across his recorded output, Wade’s work is generally described in terms of deep, textured house with Detroit and jazz inflections, aligning him with the city’s long-running tradition of dance music that bridges club functionality and musicality. He has remained active as a DJ as well as a producer, with his reputation built through a combination of radio presence, local residencies and bookings, and a steady stream of releases on Detroit-linked and international labels.
