Plaid
Plaid are an English electronic music duo composed of Andy Turner and Ed Handley. Before focusing on Plaid, Turner and Handley were founding members of The Black Dog, an early project through which they also worked under a range of other names, including Atypic and Balil, before settling on Plaid as their primary identity.
Under the Plaid name, Turner and Handley have operated within electronic music styles often associated with IDM and glitch, building a catalogue that spans multiple labels. Their releases have appeared on Clear, Peacefrog, Black Dog Productions, and Warp, reflecting a career that has moved between independent imprints and established electronic institutions.
Collaboration has also been part of Plaid’s work. The duo have recorded with singers Mara Carlyle and Nicolette, and have collaborated with Björk. These projects sit alongside their instrumental output and place Plaid in dialogue with vocal and pop-adjacent contexts as well as the more studio-focused traditions of electronic music.
Plaid have also been credited under additional names, including Plaid Bubbla and Crewmunity. Turner and Handley’s history as members of The Black Dog, their use of multiple aliases, and their work across several labels and collaborators form the core outline of Plaid’s public profile as a long-running electronic duo.
