Hollywood Undead formed in Los Angeles in 2005, building its identity around a multi-vocalist rap rock format and the use of pseudonyms. The group’s members have performed as J-Dog, Funny Man, Johnny 3 Tears, Charlie Scene and Danny. Earlier in its career, the band also used individual masks, many based on the familiar design of a hockey goaltender’s mask.

The band introduced its recorded work with Swan Songs, released September 2, 2008. Its early catalog also included the live CD/DVD Desperate Measures, issued on November 10, 2009. The second studio album, American Tragedy, followed on April 5, 2011, with Danny taking on main vocal duties after former member Deuce’s departure. Hollywood Undead released Notes from the Underground on January 8, 2013, then returned with Day of the Dead on March 31, 2015.

The group’s fifth studio record, Five, also known as V, arrived on October 27, 2017. Its first single, “California Dreaming,” had been released that July. In 2020, Hollywood Undead issued two connected releases, New Empire, Vol. 1 on February 14 and New Empire, Vol. 2 on December 4. The band’s most recent album, Hotel Kalifornia, was released August 12, 2022.
