Booka Shade
Booka Shade emerged from the Frankfurt electronic music scene as the partnership of Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, two musicians whose work has moved between house, techno and electronic pop. Before the project’s dance-floor profile took shape, the pair had originally set their sights on synth-pop. Their early recordings also appeared under a range of names, including Essential Chrome, Keim, Lanyx, Mos Eisley, Parade, Sola Fides, Subtopia, Troop and Yaruba.
In 2002, Merziger and Kammermeier helped establish Get Physical Music with M.A.N.D.Y., Thomas “DJ T.” Koch and Peter Hayo. The label provided a home for Booka Shade’s own releases. Their 2004 debut studio album, Memento, was followed by a breakout period in 2005, when the Mandarine EP and “Body Language” became international successes. “Body Language” was co-produced with M.A.N.D.Y. Further tracks including “In White Rooms” and “Night Falls” became central to the duo’s club-facing work.
Booka Shade have released 10 studio albums. Movements arrived in 2006, followed by The Sun & the Neon Light in 2008 and More! in 2010. Later albums include Eve (2013), Galvany Street (2017), Cut the Strings (2018), Dear Future Self (2020), Both (2021) and Link To The Invisible (2024). Alongside the albums, the duo have issued various EPs and compiled a mix for the DJ-Kicks series.
