
Barry Can't Swim
Joshua Spence Mainnie, known professionally as Barry Can't Swim, is a Scottish electronic music producer and DJ from Edinburgh. Working under the Barry Can't Swim name, he has become associated with a jazz house approach within electronic music.
In 2023, he released his debut album, When Will We Land?, issued on 20 October 2023. The record drew significant critical notice, appearing across numerous end-of-year lists and being shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize. The album’s reception helped move Barry Can't Swim from an emerging producer into wider public view within UK electronic music.
His profile has also been reflected in major industry nominations. Barry Can't Swim was nominated for Best Dance Act at the 2024 Brit Awards, and later received a nomination for Breakthrough Artist at the 2026 Brit Awards. He is based in Edinburgh and continues to work as both a producer and a DJ.
